Face Fit Testing for NHS & Healthcare Teams
Many Trusts and healthcare providers are finding staff face fit tests have expired – leaving them open to non-compliance under COSHH Regulation 9 and CQC audit requirements.
Velocity Safety delivers Fit2Fit-accredited qualitative (Bitrex / Saccharin) and quantitative (Portacount) testing for clinical, dental and contractor teams – helping restore compliance quickly and confidently.
Our engineers provide on-site mobile testing, refresher training and operator courses for in-house NHS teams using tight-fitting RPE across wards, surgeries and laboratories.
We provide:
- On-site and mobile testing for hospitals, clinics and dental practices
- Fit2Fit-accredited engineers with UKAS-traceable equipment
- Same-day digital certificates accepted by CQC and NHS audits
- Traceable records with automatic re-test reminders
- Optional awareness and Fit Test Operator training for staff
Examples of Respiratory Protective Equipment Requiring Face Fit Testing
If your staff wear any of the following tight-fitting masks, a face fit test is legally required to confirm the seal provides adequate protection:
- FFP2 disposable respirators
- FFP3 disposable respirators
- Half-face respirators
- Full-face respirators
Loose-fitting powered hoods (PAPR) do not require face fit testing, but they must still undergo regular hygiene, maintenance and airflow checks in line with HSE INDG 479.
Velocity Safety also provides awareness sessions and operator training to help staff select, don, and check the right type of RPE for their role – reducing failed tests and improving long-term compliance.
Fit2Fit accredited for over 10 years – partnered with Betafit to keep your RPE and PPE fully inspection-ready, using UKAS-traceable equipment and HSE-aligned testing methods.

Why Healthcare Fit Testing Matters
Respiratory protective equipment (RPE) only protects when it fits properly – and for healthcare workers, that’s more than just best practice. It’s a legal and clinical requirement under COSHH Regulation 9, CQC standards, and HSE INDG 479.
In hospitals, clinics, and dental settings, staff rely on tight-fitting masks daily for infection control and aerosol-generating procedures. But over time, weight changes, new mask models, or even subtle facial differences can break the seal – leaving workers exposed despite wearing an FFP3.
Since the pandemic, many NHS Trusts and private providers have experienced testing backlogs and expired certificates. Records are incomplete, in-house testers have moved roles, and compliance gaps have widened. During a CQC inspection, that can quickly become a finding of non-compliance.
Regular fit testing – supported by ongoing refresher training – ensures that:
- Every mask in clinical use performs as intended
- Staff understand how to select, don, and check their own RPE
- Employers meet their legal duties under COSHH Regulation 9
- CQC inspectors can instantly verify valid certificates
- Workers feel confident and protected in patient-facing roles
Velocity Safety helps healthcare teams close that gap – restoring compliance, retraining staff, and providing clear digital records that prove every mask still protects as it should.

How Our Face Fit Testing Process Works
Face fit testing doesn’t need to be disruptive or difficult. Our process keeps healthcare teams compliant, confident, and informed – with hands-on education built into every session.
1. Book & Brief
Contact us to arrange your testing session. We’ll confirm team size, preferred method (qualitative or quantitative), and any site requirements such as room layout or PPE availability.
2. On-Site Setup & Pre-Test Training
Our Fit2Fit-accredited engineers arrive fully equipped and start with a short pre-test briefing – explaining how testing works, what causes failures, and how to check and wear masks correctly. It’s a quick, practical refresher that helps staff understand the purpose behind the process.
3. Face Fit Testing (Qualitative or Quantitative)
Each staff member completes testing using either the Bitrex/Saccharin (taste) method or Portacount (particle-counting) method. Our engineers guide participants through each exercise, correcting mask use and seal issues where necessary.
4. Results, Certification & Feedback
We issue same-day digital certificates for every participant, including mask type, test method, and result. Staff also receive personal feedback and fit-check guidance, helping them maintain compliance between re-tests.
5. Re-Testing & Ongoing Support
We can schedule repeat testing in line with COSHH and Trust policy – typically every 1–2 years or sooner after facial changes, new mask models, or staff rotations. For Trusts and large care groups, Velocity can also train internal Fit Test Operators to manage re-testing in-house.
Velocity Safety makes compliance simple – combining face fit testing, refresher training, and digital certification in one efficient visit.

Face Fit Testing FAQs
Managing respiratory protection in healthcare? Here are straight answers to the most common questions we get from NHS and private healthcare teams.
Is face fit testing a legal requirement?
Yes. Under COSHH, Asbestos and Confined Space Regulations, all tight-fitting masks (including FFP2, FFP3, half-face and full-face respirators) must be face fit tested by a competent person.
How often should healthcare staff be re-tested?
At least every two years, or sooner if the wearer changes mask model, gains or loses weight, undergoes dental work, facial surgery, or develops scarring that affects fit.
Can you test large teams or multiple sites?
Absolutely. We deliver on-site testing for NHS Trusts, care groups and contractors – scheduling by department, shift or location to minimise disruption.
What types of testing do you offer?
Both qualitative (taste-based) and quantitative (Portacount/particle-counting) methods, depending on mask type and local policy.
Do staff need to be clean-shaven?
Yes. Tight-fitting masks must seal directly to the skin – any stubble, beard or facial hair can cause leaks and test failure. We’ll provide clear pre-test guidance before arrival.
What’s the difference between a fit test and a fit check?
A fit test is a formal, accredited procedure performed by a competent person (usually a Fit2Fit-accredited tester) to confirm a specific mask fits and seals correctly.
A fit check – also known as a seal check – is a quick self-check the wearer performs each time they put on their mask. It’s not a substitute for a certified face fit test but helps confirm the seal is tight before each use.
How long does a face fit test take?
Typically 15–30 minutes per person, depending on mask type and method. We can test dozens of staff per day with multiple engineers on site.
Will we receive certificates?
Yes. Every test includes a Fit2Fit-compliant certificate with wearer name, mask make/model, test type and result – suitable for HR, CQC or audit submission.
Do you provide combined RPE services?
Yes. We can perform face fit testing alongside RPE Servicing, Breathing Air Testing, or Gas Monitor Calibration – all in one visit.
Do you offer face fit testing near me?
Yes – Velocity Safety provides on-site face fit testing across the North West and nationwide, including Manchester, Liverpool, Preston, Blackburn, Blackpool, Lancaster, Leeds, Birmingham, and London.
We also travel across the Midlands, Wales and Scotland for multi-site NHS and private healthcare clients.
How much does face fit testing cost?
A half day (8–10 tests) costs £450 + VAT, and a full day (10–18 tests) is £595 + VAT.
Pricing for individual or multi-site sessions depends on location and test type. Contact us for a same-day quote.
Do you issue digital certificates?
Yes. Every test result is issued digitally with the wearer’s name, mask model, method used and outcome – all compliant with HSE INDG 479 Appendix 1 for audit and insurance records.
