Our RPE Inspection Process
RPE inspections assess the current condition, assembly and function of reusable masks and powered air systems. Our technicians follow a structured process informed by COSHH Regulation 9 and the applicable manufacturer instructions.
1. Asset Logging & Unit Identification
We log every mask, PAPR unit and headtop on site, confirm or assign unique ID numbers, and note any issues reported by the wearer. This creates the baseline for your ongoing inspection records.
2. Condition & Integrity Assessment
We inspect seals, facepieces, valves, straps, lenses, hoses and connectors for wear, perishing, cracks, contamination or incorrect assembly – the faults that most commonly cause RPE to fail in real use.
3. Filter, Component & Fit-For-Use Checks
Filters are checked for expiry, compatibility and correct installation. We also inspect O-rings, diaphragms, gaskets, clips and harness points for damage, deterioration, incorrect assembly or missing components.
4. Flow-Rate & Functional Testing (PAPR Units)
Powered air systems are checked for airflow output, battery condition, fan operation and headtop integrity where applicable. Results are compared with the relevant manufacturer operating requirements.
5. Inspection Results, Tag-Out & Next-Due Dates
Every unit receives a clear pass/fail result. Unsafe equipment is tagged out immediately, and you receive same-day digital documentation with next-due inspection dates to maintain COSHH Reg 9 compliance.
Reliable RPE starts with consistent inspections.
Our process provides a documented inspection status for each unit, whether you manage five masks or five hundred.
JSP PowerCap & PowerCap Infinity Inspections
Velocity Safety provides documented inspections, manufacturer-authorised servicing and repairs for applicable JSP PowerCap Active, PowerCap Active IP and PowerCap Infinity systems.
PowerCap Active and Active IP are TH1 powered filtering devices, while PowerCap Infinity is a TH3 powered air-purifying respirator. Each system contains powered, respiratory and protective components that require regular checking and maintenance.
Depending on the model and service required, our JSP PowerCap work may include:
- Filters, pre-filters, filter covers and filter condition
- Airflow output and airflow-indicator checks
- Fan, motor and turbo operation
- Battery condition, charging docks and power supplies
- Visors, face skirts and visor seals
- Bump caps, helmets, harnesses and head protection
- Warning indicators and alarms where fitted
- Component compatibility, cleanliness and correct assembly
- Approved cleaning, repair or component replacement where required
- Equipment identification, service outcome and next-due date
If a unit fails inspection, we record the defect and can provide manufacturer-authorised servicing or repairs where the model and identified fault are supported.
Inspection and servicing remain separate activities. An inspection records the equipment’s current condition and operation, while servicing may involve approved disassembly, cleaning, maintenance, component replacement, repair and post-service testing.

Whether you have 5 units or 500, every item receives a documented pass/fail outcome and a clear next-due date.
RPE Inspection Records and Asset Registers
COSHH Regulation 9 requires employers to keep suitable records of examinations and tests carried out on control measures, including reusable respiratory protective equipment.
Velocity Safety provides a documented inspection record for every item examined, helping employers show when equipment was checked, what was inspected, which defects were identified and what action was recommended.
Each RPE inspection record may include:
- Unique equipment ID: A clear asset reference linked to the individual mask, powered unit or breathing apparatus component.
- Equipment details: Manufacturer, model, type and serial number where available.
- Inspection date: Confirmation of when the examination was completed.
- Components checked: Face seal, valves, straps, filters, hoses, connections, batteries and other relevant parts.
- Functional results: Flow-rate or performance readings where applicable to powered RPE.
- Inspection outcome: Confirmation of whether the equipment passed the inspection, requires further servicing or should be removed from use.
- Defects identified: Details of damage, wear, contamination, missing components or incorrect assembly.
- Action required: Whether the item can remain in use, requires servicing or must be replaced.
- Next inspection date: A clear due date based on the required examination interval.
Reports can be supplied for individual units, complete departments or multi-site RPE fleets, giving health and safety teams one clear record of inspection status across the organisation.
PAPR Inspections for Powered Air Respirators
Powered air respirators require additional functional checks beyond those completed on a standard reusable mask. Velocity Safety inspects PAPR fan units, hoses, filters, batteries and headtops with reference to the manufacturer’s requirements.
- Airflow testing where applicable to check output against the manufacturer’s specified operating range
- Inspection of batteries and chargers for performance, charging faults and safe operation
- Hose and headtop checks for splits, wear, deformation or contamination
- Seal and connection integrity for all components in the respiratory chain
- Fan performance – operational condition, airflow stability and output
- Clear next-due inspection dates and digital records for audit readiness
JSP PowerCap inspections are available for individual units, complete departments and multi-site fleets. PowerCap Active and Active IP inspections are completed against their applicable TH1 operating requirements, while PowerCap Infinity inspections reflect its TH3 classification and model-specific warning and airflow functions.
Where an inspection identifies a repair or servicing requirement, this is recorded separately. Velocity Safety can provide manufacturer-authorised servicing and repairs for applicable JSP PowerCap models, with all completed work and outstanding actions clearly documented.
Suitable for woodworking, engineering, manufacturing and other sites operating powered air systems. Filtering PAPR units are not suitable for spraying isocyanate paints; HSE requires suitable air-fed breathing apparatus for that task.

Velocity Safety supports organisations with large respirator fleets or multiple locations. Whether you operate a single workshop or manage equipment across several sites, we provide scheduled inspections, equipment identification and centralised reporting to support your RPE maintenance programme.
- Bulk inspections for 10–500+ units – ideal for manufacturing, logistics, chemical handling and workshop environments.
- Multi-site scheduling – coordinated inspections across several depots, departments or locations.
- Centralised reporting – digital records, unit IDs and next-due dates in one audit-ready summary.
- Minimal disruption to operations – on-site visits planned around shift patterns and production schedules.
- Combine with other compliance checks – LEV testing, Ladder Inspections, Noise Assessments and more.
How Often Should RPE Be Inspected?
Reusable RPE must be examined at suitable intervals to confirm that it remains effective, correctly assembled and safe to use.
For RPE used regularly, a thorough examination is normally required at least once every month. More frequent checks may be necessary where equipment is used intensively, exposed to heavy contamination or subject to demanding conditions.
Equipment used only occasionally may be examined at intervals of up to three months, provided it is checked before and after use and stored correctly between uses.
| RPE or Usage Pattern | Typical Inspection Arrangement | Additional Checks |
|---|---|---|
| Reusable half masks and full-face respirators used regularly | Thorough examination normally at least monthly. | Wearer check before each use and after cleaning. |
| Reusable RPE used only occasionally | The interval may extend up to three months where justified by use, storage and risk. | Check before and after every use. |
| Powered air respirators | Scheduled examination based on usage, manufacturer instructions and the RPE programme. | Airflow, fan, battery, hose, filter and headtop checks where applicable. |
| Airline-fed RPE | Periodic examination according to the system, manufacturer guidance and risk assessment. | Inspect hoses, couplings, regulators and facepiece components. |
| Equipment exposed to heavy contamination or demanding use | More frequent examination may be necessary. | Inspect after incidents, damage, faults or suspected loss of performance. |
| Single-use disposable respirators | Not subject to the same recorded periodic examination regime as reusable RPE. | The wearer must check condition, straps and suitability before use and discard damaged or contaminated masks. |
The appropriate frequency should be recorded within your RPE programme and adjusted where usage, contamination or equipment condition creates a higher risk.

Common RPE Failures Found During Inspections
Most issues that make RPE unsafe aren’t obvious to the wearer. These are common failures we identify during COSHH Reg 9 inspections:
- Worn or perished face seals
- Cracked or degraded valves
- Incorrect, expired or incompatible filters
- Low airflow from PAPR units
- Perished, split or contaminated hoses
- Missing, damaged or incompatible components
Routine inspections help identify faults that may not be obvious during a wearer’s pre-use check. Our documented examinations provide a clear outcome for each unit, identify equipment requiring further servicing or removal from use and support your COSHH Regulation 9 maintenance records.
Your RPE is only effective if it’s been properly inspected. Our COSHH Reg 9–compliant checks keep every mask and powered air system safe, functional and audit-ready.

Frequently Asked Questions – RPE Inspections
Managing respiratory protection? These answers help keep your workforce compliant and covered:
Is RPE inspection a legal requirement?
Yes. COSHH Regulation 9 requires respiratory protective equipment used as a control measure to be properly stored, checked, maintained and examined at suitable intervals.
Employers must also retain suitable records of examinations and tests carried out on reusable RPE.
How often should RPE be examined?
Reusable RPE used regularly should normally be thoroughly examined at least once every month.
Where reusable equipment is used only occasionally, the interval may extend up to three months if this is justified by the risk assessment, storage conditions and manufacturer instructions. The wearer must still check the equipment before every use.
More frequent examinations may be required where RPE is exposed to heavy contamination, demanding conditions or intensive use.
What’s the difference between RPE inspection and face fit testing?
- RPE inspection checks the condition and function of the equipment, including seals, valves, straps, filters, hoses and powered components.
- Face fit testing checks whether a particular tight-fitting facepiece seals adequately to an individual wearer.
A respirator can be in good mechanical condition but still be unsuitable for the wearer, so both processes may be required.
What is the difference between an RPE inspection and RPE servicing?
An RPE inspection checks and records the current condition, assembly and performance of the equipment. It produces a clear pass or fail result and identifies any defects requiring action.
RPE servicing involves maintenance work such as cleaning, repair, replacement of worn components and manufacturer-specific functional servicing.
If an item fails inspection, it may need servicing or replacement before it can return to use.
Do you inspect powered air respirators?
Yes. We inspect powered air respirators including fan units, filters, airflow, hoses, headtops, seals, batteries and chargers where applicable.
This includes inspections for JSP PowerCap Active, PowerCap Active IP and PowerCap Infinity systems.
Can you inspect RPE from any manufacturer?
We inspect reusable and powered RPE from many leading manufacturers, including Sundström, 3M, JSP, Moldex, Centurion and Trend.
Inspection scope depends on the equipment type, model, available manufacturer instructions and any specialist test equipment required. Contact us with the make and model if you’re unsure.
Do you inspect JSP PowerCap and PowerCap Infinity systems?
Yes. We provide documented inspections for JSP PowerCap Active, PowerCap Active IP and PowerCap Infinity systems.
Depending on the model, checks may include filters, airflow, motors, batteries, charging equipment, visors, face seals, head protection, warning functions and overall condition.
What is the difference between a JSP PowerCap inspection and servicing?
An inspection checks and records the PowerCap’s current condition, assembly and applicable operating functions.
Servicing goes further and may involve manufacturer-authorised disassembly, cleaning, repair, component replacement and model-specific maintenance. Velocity Safety provides documented inspections, manufacturer-authorised servicing and repairs for applicable PowerCap systems, with the precise scope determined by the model, condition and faults identified.
What happens if a mask fails inspection?
We tag the unit as Do Not Use, document the failure, and advise you on repairs, servicing or replacement. You’ll see all failures clearly in your digital report.
Do you offer on-site inspections?
Yes. We carry out RPE inspections on-site nationwide, and we also offer workshop inspections for single units or small batches.
Does an RPE inspection help with COSHH compliance?
Yes. COSHH Regulation 9 requires control measures, including reusable RPE, to be properly maintained, examined and tested at suitable intervals. Our inspections provide documented findings that can support maintenance records, internal reviews and HSE inspections.
Do PAPR units need flow-rate testing?
Powered air units must maintain the airflow specified by the manufacturer. We carry out airflow checks where required by the equipment’s inspection procedure and record results against the applicable operating requirements.
What types of RPE do you inspect?
We inspect reusable half masks, full-face respirators, PAPR/TH/TM systems, airline-fed equipment, hoses, batteries, chargers and headtops.
Can you handle large volumes or multi-site inspections?
Yes. We regularly inspect fleets of 20–300+ units across single or multiple sites. We provide centralised reporting, asset registers and next-due schedules.
How long does an RPE inspection take?
Most inspections take 5–10 minutes per unit, depending on the type and condition. PAPR checks take slightly longer due to flow-rate and battery testing.
Do you inspect airline-fed respirators?
Yes. We inspect full airline-fed systems including hoses, regulators, connections and facepieces.
Do disposable masks need inspecting?
Single-use disposable respirators are not normally included within the same recorded periodic examination programme as reusable RPE.
The wearer must still inspect the mask before use, checking its condition, straps, nose clip, cleanliness and expiry information. A damaged, contaminated or previously used single-use respirator should be discarded.
Do you provide digital reports?
Yes. Each inspected item receives a traceable digital record showing its equipment ID, inspection date, components checked, pass or fail result, defects identified and next examination date.
Reports can be consolidated into an asset register for departments, large equipment fleets and multi-site organisations.
Can you combine RPE inspections with other testing services?
Yes. Many clients pair RPE inspections with RPE maintenance and servicing, Face Fit Testing, LEV Testing, Breathing Air Testing or Ladder/Lifting inspections during the same visit to reduce downtime and site costs.
Do you inspect RPE and Face Fit Equipment near me?
We do. Our RPE inspection, servicing and Face Fit Testing services are available nationwide. In the North West, we regularly support clients across Preston, Burnley, Blackpool and the Fylde Coast. Inspection, servicing and face fit testing are separate activities, and we’ll advise which are relevant to your equipment and RPE programme.
