PFPE Inspection, Servicing & Equipment Management
Personal fall protection equipment (PFPE) covers the equipment worn or used by a person to prevent or arrest a fall from height. The correct selection, compatibility, use, storage and maintenance of every component are essential because the equipment must operate together as a complete system.

What You Need to Know About PFPE Inspections
PFPE inspection requirements depend on the equipment, how frequently it is used, the working environment, manufacturer instructions and the findings of the employer’s risk assessment. Pre-use checks, recorded detailed inspections and manufacturer servicing are separate activities.
Pre-Use Checks
The wearer should inspect PFPE before every use and must be trained to recognise damage, contamination, missing components, illegible labels and other defects. A pre-use check does not replace a recorded detailed inspection.
Detailed PFPE Inspections
Detailed inspections are completed by a competent person and formally recorded. HSE guidance recommends that fall arrest equipment made from webbing or rope receives a detailed inspection at least every six months. Interim inspections may also be necessary where equipment is used in arduous conditions or exposed to paint, chemicals, grit, weather, heavy wear or contamination.
The final interval should be determined by the risk assessment, manufacturer instructions, equipment type, frequency of use and conditions in which it is used.
LOLER Thorough Examinations
LOLER does not automatically apply to every item of PFPE. Where equipment is used for lifting or lowering people, or otherwise falls within the scope of LOLER, a separate thorough examination may be required. Lifting equipment used to lift people is generally examined at least every six months unless a written examination scheme specifies another interval.
We will confirm whether the work being provided is a PFPE inspection, a LOLER thorough examination, manufacturer servicing or a combination of these activities.
Servicing and Maintenance
Inspection establishes the current condition of the equipment. Servicing involves maintenance, internal examination, authorised repair or replacement of serviceable components in accordance with the manufacturer’s procedures.
Retractable fall arrest blocks and inertia reels commonly require manufacturer servicing at intervals specified by the manufacturer. WAHSA guidance states that fall arrest blocks should be serviced, inspected and re-certified by the manufacturer or an approved service company at least every 12 months, or sooner where necessary.

We help employers manage PFPE in line with the PPE at Work Regulations, the Work at Height Regulations, applicable PUWER and LOLER duties, BS EN 365, BS 8437:2022 and the relevant manufacturer instructions. Here’s how our inspections are delivered:
1. Initial Site Walk & Equipment Log
We identify and record all harnesses, lanyards, connectors, inertia reels, and fall arrest devices requiring inspection.
2. Thorough Visual & Tactile Check
Each item is examined for cuts, abrasion, damaged stitching, UV degradation, corrosion, contamination, deformation, illegible labels and applicable manufacturer lifespan limits. Checks are completed against the relevant manufacturer instructions and inspection criteria.
3. Tagging & Quarantine (If Needed)
Items that pass receive an inspection tag and next-due date. Equipment that fails is clearly identified, recorded and quarantined or marked “Do Not Use” to prevent it being returned to service accidentally.
4. Digital Report & Compliance Record
We issue a traceable digital report identifying each item, the inspection completed, findings, pass or fail outcome, defects and next-due date. Reports can cover individual items, complete departments or multi-site PFPE registers.

Only if it’s within its current inspection interval and not showing signs of damage or expiry. We recommend booking before any lapse.
