Inspecting Storage systems in warehousing
Pallet racking is a type of storage system used within many organisations. It is identified as work equipment and requires regular inspections to ensure it is safe to use.
Failure to have your racking and shelving inspected can lead to potential prosecution, fines, injuries, fatalities, liability claims and can invalidate your insurance.

Examples of storage systems that require inspection:
- Standard pallet racking
- Drive in pallet racking
- Live pallet racking
- Narrow aisle racking
- Cantilever pallet racking
- Mobile pallet racking
- Double deep pallet racking
- Push back pallet racking
- Short span shelving
Expert Racking Inspections: What you need to know
Organisations should appoint a Person Responsible for Racking Safety a (PRRS). This person should have the necessary training, skills, knowledge and experience to complete weekly inspections or other regular intervals based on risk assessment. This should be a maintained formal written record.
In addition to the weekly inspections by the PRRS, expert inspections should be undertaken at intervals not exceeding 12 months. That’s where Velocity Safety can help. We will complete the expert inspections on your behalf and provide a written report to the PRRS with any observations and proposals for remedial action if necessary.
“To ensure that a racking installation continues to be serviceable and safe, the storage equipment should be inspected on a regular basis. The frequency of inspections depends on a variety of factors that are particular to the site concerned and should be determined by a nominated ‘person responsible for racking safety’ (PRRS) to suit the operating conditions of the warehouse”
