Face Fit Testing Services for All Industries
Many UK businesses are finding their team’s face fit tests have expired = leaving them exposed to non-compliance under COSHH Regulation 9 and HSE INDG 479.
Velocity Safety delivers on-site face fit testing for teams across construction, manufacturing and engineering – restoring compliance quickly and reducing audit risk.
Our Fit2Fit-accredited testers carry out both qualitative (Bitrex / Saccharin) and quantitative (Portacount) testing, ensuring every wearer’s mask provides an effective seal. Optional refresher training and Fit Test Operator courses are also available for in-house teams managing ongoing RPE programmes.
We provide:
- On-site and mobile testing for factories, construction sites and offices
- Digital certificates issued same day for insurance and audit evidence
- Traceable test records and re-test reminders for every wearer
- Nationwide service for single sites and multi-location companies
Examples of Respiratory Protective Equipment Requiring Face Fit Testing
If your employees use any of the following tight-fitting masks, they must undergo a face fit test to confirm the seal provides adequate protection:
- FFP2 disposable respirators
- FFP3 disposable respirators
- Half-face respirators
- Full-face respirators
Loose-fitting powered hoods (PAPR/TH units) do not require face fit testing, but must still undergo regular hygiene, airflow and maintenance checks in line with HSE INDG 479 and BS EN 529.
Velocity Safety also offers RPE awareness and Fit Test Operator training to help teams select, don and check the right equipment – improving first-time pass rates and long-term compliance.
Fit2Fit accredited for over 10 years – partnered with Betafit to keep your RPE and PPE fully inspection-ready, using UKAS-traceable equipment and HSE-aligned testing methods.

Why Face Fit Testing Matters
Respiratory protective equipment (RPE) only protects when it fits properly – and that’s not optional. Under COSHH Regulation 9, employers must ensure every tight-fitting respirator is correctly fitted and proven to seal to the wearer’s face.
Face fit testing is not optional – it’s a legal requirement under COSHH Regulation 9 for all tight-fitting RPE used at work. Testing confirms the mask forms a safe, effective seal and that the chosen model provides adequate protection for each individual wearer.
If the mask leaks, it can’t protect the worker – no matter how advanced or expensive it is. Over time, even small changes such as weight loss, dental work or new mask models can compromise the fit and leave employees exposed to harmful dusts, fumes or airborne contaminants.
In recent years, expired face fit certificates have become one of the most common compliance gaps identified during HSE and insurer audits. It’s a simple but critical step in maintaining both legal compliance and workforce safety.
Regular face fit testing ensures:
- Every wearer’s mask forms a secure, reliable seal
- Staff understand how to don and check their own RPE correctly
- Employers fulfil their duties under COSHH and related HSE guidance
- Auditors and insurers can instantly verify valid test records
- Workers feel confident and protected in hazardous or clinical environments
Velocity Safety helps close that compliance gap – restoring assurance, updating records and retraining staff where needed. Every test includes clear documentation, instant certification and professional feedback, giving you confidence that every respirator on site actually protects the people who rely on it.
What Our Face Fit Testing Service Includes
Velocity Safety delivers Fit2Fit-accredited face fit testing and RPE operator training for every industry – from construction and manufacturing to laboratories and healthcare.
Because every face shape is different, no single mask design fits everyone. That’s why we use both qualitative and quantitative methods to verify protection – either taste-based testing using Bitrex or Saccharin, or precise particle counting with Portacount systems. This ensures every respirator on site performs as intended.
Each session is tailored to your site, schedule and workforce size, with same-day digital certification, audit-ready records, and full UKAS-traceable documentation included as standard.
Our Core Services
- Qualitative Face Fit Testing (Bitrex/Saccharin) – A taste-based test suitable for disposable and half-mask respirators such as FFP2 and FFP3. It verifies whether the mask provides an adequate seal during normal breathing and movement.
- Quantitative Face Fit Testing (Portacount) – A particle-counting method ideal for high-risk or policy-mandated environments. Provides an objective fit factor score for half and full-face respirators.
- Re-Testing & Periodic Checks – Recommended every 1–2 years, or sooner if the wearer changes mask model, facial features or job role.
- Group & Multi-Site Bookings – Designed for contractors, manufacturers, councils and larger teams. Our mobile test units can visit multiple sites in one day.
- Digital Certification & Record Management – Every test result is logged, issued digitally and stored for HR, HSE or insurer audits.
- On-Site or Mobile Clinics – Delivered directly at your workplace or via our mobile units – minimising disruption and downtime.
Training & Support Options
Beyond testing, Velocity Safety provides practical training and support to help teams manage their own RPE programmes safely and confidently.

Face Fit Testing FAQs
Managing respiratory protection can raise a lot of questions. Here are clear, HSE-aligned answers to the most common queries employers and safety managers ask about face fit testing.
Is face fit testing a legal requirement?
Yes. Under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations 2002, and related guidance such as the Control of Asbestos and Confined Space Regulations, all tight-fitting respirators must be face fit tested by a competent person.
How often should face fit testing be carried out?
Face fit tests should be repeated every 1–2 years, or sooner if:
- The wearer changes mask make or model
- They gain or lose weight
- They undergo major dental work or facial surgery
- They develop scarring or facial changes that could affect the seal
Who can perform face fit testing?
Tests must be carried out by a competent, Fit2Fit-accredited tester using recognised methods (qualitative or quantitative). In-house testers can be trained and certified through Velocity Safety’s Fit Test Operator Training.
Do you need to be clean-shaven for a face fit test?
Yes. Tight-fitting masks (such as FFP2, FFP3, half- and full-face respirators) must seal directly to the skin – any stubble, beard or facial hair will cause leaks and test failure. Workers who cannot shave should use loose-fitting powered hoods (PAPR) instead.
What’s the difference between a face fit test and a fit check?
A face fit test is a formal, accredited procedure carried out by a competent person (usually a Fit2Fit-accredited tester) to confirm that a specific make, model and size of mask fits the wearer correctly and provides an effective seal.
A fit check, sometimes called a seal check, is a quick self-check the wearer performs every time they put on their mask – it’s not a substitute for a certified face fit test, but helps confirm the seal remains tight before each use.
What are the two types of face fit testing?
- Qualitative Testing (Bitrex or Saccharin) – A taste-based test used for disposable and half-face masks.
- Quantitative Testing (Portacount) – A particle-counting test used for half and full-face respirators, producing a measurable “fit factor” score.
Do spray painters need a face fit test for isocyanates?
Yes. Anyone spraying 2K paints, isocyanate-based coatings or solvent finishes must have a face fit test for tight-fitting RPE. HSE requires a proven seal for FFP3 and half-mask respirators used in spray booths, and many employers choose quantitative testing due to the protection factor needed for isocyanate work. Air-fed (TH) hoods do not require a face fit test, but must still undergo airflow and maintenance checks.
How long does a face fit test take?
Typically 15–30 minutes per person, depending on the method used and the wearer’s familiarity with the equipment. Larger teams can be tested in scheduled batches to minimise disruption.
How long is a face fit test certificate valid for?
Certificates are generally valid for two years, but employers must ensure the fit remains effective between tests – for example, if a worker changes role, mask model, or physical appearance.
Can I do my own face fit testing?
Only if you’ve completed suitable Fit Test Operator Training and can demonstrate competence. Velocity Safety offers Fit2Fit-aligned operator courses to help employers manage in-house testing safely and correctly.
Do you provide face fit testing near me?
Yes – Velocity Safety provides on-site face fit testing across the North West, including: Lancashire, Greater Manchester, Liverpool, Cheshire, Preston, Blackburn, Burnley, Blackpool, Bolton, Bury, Chorley, Rochdale, Southport, and Cumbria.
