What You Need to Know About EN795 Anchor Devices

Personal Fall Protection Systems (PFPS) differ dependent on the system of work being undertaken.

Restraint Systems are used to prevent the user from reaching zones where the risk of a fall from height exists.

Work Positioning Systems use a personal fall protection system as the primary means of support and either a separately connected safety back up system or a collective fall protection system.

Rope Access Systems enable the user to get to and from the place of work in such a way that a free fall is prevented or arrested, by using the working line and a safety line connected separately to anchor points.

Fall Arrest Systems limits the impact force on the body of the user during fall arrest.

Different Systems impose different loadings on the anchor device. The pull testing requirements can also differ.

Generally for restraint and fall arrest purposes the anchor device should be pull tested at least every 12 months.

For rope access, rescue and devices used to raise and lower people. It should be tested at least every 6 months to comply with Regulation 9 of the Lifting Operation and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998.

When Do Anchor Points Need Inspection, Testing or Recertification?

The correct inspection and testing requirements depend on the anchor system, intended use, manufacturer instructions, installation records and examination scheme.

Situation Typical Inspection or Testing Requirement
New anchor installation Installation checks, identification, documentation and any testing required by the system design or manufacturer before release for use.
Existing restraint or fall arrest anchor Periodic inspection by a competent person, with testing completed where required by the inspection scheme, system design or manufacturer instructions.
Roof anchor or eyebolt Condition, corrosion, fixing security, substrate and identification checks, followed by load testing where applicable.
Rope access or rescue anchor More frequent inspection may be required due to the intended use, loading and system classification.
Anchor involved in a fall or load event Remove from use and arrange inspection before the anchor or system is used again.
Visible corrosion, movement or damage Prevent use until the condition has been assessed and any necessary remedial work and re-testing completed.
Roof repair or structural alteration Reassessment may be required where work could have affected the fixing, substrate, access route or system layout.
Missing installation or inspection records The anchor must be identified and assessed before a competent person can determine whether testing, investigation, remedial work or replacement is required.

Roof Anchor Testing, Inspection & Certification

Roof anchors provide a secure connection point for work restraint, fall arrest, maintenance access and roof-edge protection systems. Because they are exposed to weather, movement and repeated use, their condition cannot be confirmed by looking at the anchor from a distance.

Velocity Safety provides roof anchor testing, inspection and certification for fixed eyebolts, roof-mounted anchor points, restraint systems and associated fall protection equipment.

A roof anchor inspection may include:

  • Anchor identification: Confirming the type, intended use and available installation records.
  • Visual condition checks: Inspecting for corrosion, deformation, cracking, damage or unauthorised alterations.
  • Fixing and substrate checks: Looking for movement, loose fixings or deterioration around the installation point.
  • System suitability: Confirming the anchor remains appropriate for restraint, fall arrest, rope access or the intended work method.
  • Load or pull testing: Applying a controlled test load where required by the system design, inspection scheme or manufacturer instructions.
  • Certification and tagging: Recording the findings, identifying defects and confirming the next inspection date.

Roof anchors should also be assessed after a reported fall, impact, building alteration, roof repair or any event that could have affected the fixing or surrounding structure.

Anchor Testing Certificates, Reports & Identification

Every anchor inspection, installation or pull test is documented clearly so you can demonstrate what was checked, what was tested and whether the system is suitable for continued use.

Depending on the service completed, your documentation may include:

  • Anchor identification: Unique asset references, location details and photographs for each anchor or system.
  • Inspection findings: Condition of the anchor, fixings, substrate, markings and surrounding structure.
  • Test results: Applied load, recorded measurements and pass or fail outcome where load testing is required.
  • Certification: Digital inspection or test certificates confirming the work completed and the result.
  • Defect reporting: Details of corrosion, movement, damage, missing records or other issues requiring attention.
  • Anchor tags: Pass, fail or identification labels showing the inspection date and next test due date.

Frequently Asked Questions – Fall Arrest Anchors

Anchor points are a vital part of safe working at height. Here’s what our clients usually want to know:

What is anchor point testing?

Anchor point testing is the inspection and, where required, controlled load testing of a fall protection anchor to confirm its condition, installation and suitability for continued use.

The work may include visual checks, fixing and substrate assessment, identification, pull testing, tagging and certification.

How often should anchor points be inspected or tested?

The correct interval depends on the type of anchor, intended use, manufacturer instructions and the system’s examination scheme.

Many fall arrest and restraint anchors are inspected on a 12-month cycle, while anchors used for rope access, rescue or lifting people may require more frequent examination. Additional inspection is also required after a fall, impact, damage or alteration.

What standards do you follow?

All testing and installation work follows BS 7883:2019 (system design and inspection), BS 8610:2017 (anchor installation and testing) and BS EN 795 (performance of anchor devices). We also align with HSE guidance and manufacturer specifications to maintain full compliance.

Is anchor point testing a legal requirement?

Work-at-height equipment must be properly inspected, maintained and kept suitable for use. Fall protection anchor systems therefore require periodic examination by a competent person.

The exact inspection and testing method depends on the anchor type, intended use, applicable standards, manufacturer instructions and examination scheme.

What is the difference between anchor inspection and pull testing?

An anchor inspection assesses the condition, identification, fixings, substrate, corrosion, damage and available documentation.

Pull testing applies a controlled load to the anchor where required to verify the fixing or installation. Not every inspection automatically requires the same load test, so the competent person must determine the correct method for the system.

Do roof anchors need testing and certification?

Roof anchors require periodic inspection and appropriate certification so that users can confirm the anchor has been assessed and remains suitable for its intended purpose.

Testing may also be required following installation, repairs, structural alterations, visible damage or a reported fall.

What does a roof anchor inspection include?

A roof anchor inspection may include checks for corrosion, deformation, loose fixings, movement, damaged seals, substrate deterioration, missing identification and changes to the surrounding roof structure.

Where required, the anchor is also load-tested and the results recorded on the inspection certificate.

Does every anchor point require pull testing?

No single testing method applies to every anchor point.

The requirement for pull testing depends on the anchor design, installation method, substrate, manufacturer instructions, system documentation and inspection scheme. Some inspections may require condition checks and documentation review, while others require controlled load testing.

What load should an anchor point be tested to?

The correct test load depends on the anchor type, intended use, applicable standard, system design and manufacturer requirements.

Velocity Safety identifies the appropriate test method before applying a controlled load and records the result using calibrated equipment.

What happens if an anchor fails testing?

The anchor should be clearly identified as failed and removed from use.

The inspection report will explain the defect and recommend the next step, which may include further investigation, repair, replacement or reinstallation. The anchor must be successfully re-inspected or re-tested before being returned to service.

Can an anchor point with no documentation be certified?

Missing documentation does not automatically mean an anchor can be certified through a simple pull test.

The anchor must first be identified and assessed, including its condition, substrate, fixing method and intended use. Further investigation, testing or replacement may be required before a competent person can make a certification decision.

What standards apply to fall protection anchor points?

The applicable requirements depend on the anchor device and complete system.

Relevant standards may include BS EN 795 for anchor devices, BS 7883 for anchor system design, installation, maintenance and inspection, and BS 8610 for anchor systems. Manufacturer instructions and the system examination scheme must also be considered.

What types of anchors can Velocity Safety test?

Velocity Safety tests a wide range of fall protection and work-at-height anchors, including roof anchors, eyebolts, façade anchors, restraint anchors, fall arrest anchors, rope access anchors, rescue anchors, horizontal systems and associated anchor devices.

The exact inspection and testing method is confirmed after reviewing the system and intended use.

Do you provide anchor point inspection tags?

Yes. Anchor points can be supplied with identification or inspection tags showing the asset reference, inspection status, test date and next inspection due date.

This helps site teams confirm that the correct anchor has been inspected and identify any anchor that has failed or been removed from use.

What documentation is provided after anchor testing?

Documentation may include a digital inspection report, anchor identification, photographs, condition findings, applied test information, pass or fail status, defects, remedial recommendations and the next inspection date.

New installations may also require installation records, system information and supporting technical documentation.

Can Velocity Safety install and test new anchor points?

Yes. Velocity Safety can survey, supply, install, inspect and test new anchor points for restraint, fall arrest, access and rescue applications.

The anchor type, fixing method and testing requirements are selected according to the structure, intended use and manufacturer specifications.

Do you provide anchor testing nationwide?

Yes. Velocity Safety provides anchor installation, inspection, pull testing and certification for individual sites and multi-location organisations across the UK.

Are you qualified to handle anchor installation and testing from major manufacturers like RIDGEGEAR?

Absolutely. We’re approved service agents for RIDGEGEAR, Abtech Safety, Globestock and Betafit. Our engineers are trained to inspect, repair and certify their full range of anchor devices, SRLs and fall protection equipment.

How is an anchor pull test performed?

A calibrated digital tester applies a controlled load to the anchor to simulate real-world fall forces. The reading confirms whether the fixing can safely support the required kN value for its class and application. The result is recorded and included in your compliance report.

What documentation will I receive after testing?

You’ll receive a digital inspection report, calibration traceability, and a compliance certificate for each anchor – including load data, pass/fail results, photographs, and next inspection due date.
