Under Regulation 12 of the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992, workplace floors and traffic routes must be suitable and must not expose people to health or safety risks because they are uneven or slippery. A PTV of 0–24 indicates high slip potential, 25–35 indicates moderate slip potential and 36 or above indicates low slip potential under the conditions tested. The result should still be considered alongside contamination, cleaning, footwear, use and other relevant risk factors.

Real-World Precedent: £400,000 Fine for Fatal Slip
“This case demonstrates the importance of slip risks being adequately controlled. It should serve a warning to the retail industry, and particularly supermarkets, that signage alone is not an adequate control. Proactive measures must be taken to either prevent floors becoming slippery or precluding public access.” Cornwall Council’s investigating officer Sarah-Jane Brown.
This quote followed the prosecution of Co-op after a fatal slip in one of their Truro stores. Despite placing wet floor signs, the court found they had not done enough to control risk – resulting in a £400,000 fine.
The case demonstrates why warning signs should not be relied upon as the only control where a foreseeable slip risk exists. Dutyholders should assess the hazard and introduce practical measures to remove or reduce the risk.

Do I Need a Pendulum Slip Test?
