What’s Included in Our Cable Avoidance Tool Calibration
CAT & Genny calibration for individual sets and working fleets.
A cable avoidance tool (CAT) is a receiver used to help locate buried services before excavation. A Genny applies a signal that a compatible locator can detect.
Our CAT scanner calibration service checks equipment performance against the relevant manufacturer requirements. We support individual units, complete sets and fleets, with calibration or validation appropriate to the model.
What we check and record:
- Condition and controls including damage and relevant battery connections
- CAT receiver response to known signal sources, with depth indication checked where applicable
- Genny signal output including the relevant frequency and functional checks
- Model-specific calibration or validation with adjustment where appropriate to the procedure
- Traceable calibration records identifying your equipment and the results of the work
- Fault advice with further assessment or repair options discussed first

Not sure what your equipment needs?Send the exact model, last calibration date and any fault symptoms. We’ll help you plan the next step.
How Often Should CAT & Genny Units Be Calibrated?
The interval depends on the exact make and model, its maintenance instructions and your site requirements. Radiodetection recommends annual service and calibration for C.A.T4 and Genny4 equipment. Some C.Scope digital models do not require periodic recalibration.
Plan your equipment checks around:
- The manufacturer’s calibration or validation guidance
- Use, working conditions and equipment history
- Damage, repairs or failed functional checks
- Client and site documentation requirements
When should you arrange an earlier check?
Do not wait for the scheduled date if a unit is damaged, has suffered water ingress, fails a functional check or gives suspect readings. Remove it from use and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for assessment.
A current calibration certificate does not cancel the need for routine pre-use checks.
What if a CAT or Genny needs repair?
We explain any fault and discuss the options. Depending on the equipment, this may mean further assessment, repair through a suitable service partner or replacement advice.
Tell us about damage or warning messages when booking. After repair, the appropriate functional checks and any required calibration or validation should be completed before the equipment returns to service.
CAT & Genny Checks, Calibration & ValidationWhat does your equipment need?
Pre-use checks and scheduled calibration or validation serve different purposes. The right maintenance route depends on your model.
| Compare | Routine checks | Calibration / validation |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Condition & function | Performance verification |
| When | Before use, following the instructions | At the specified interval, or sooner if needed |
| Records | As required by your site procedures | Records of the work and results |
Radiodetection C.A.T4 & Genny4
Radiodetection recommends annual service and calibration. Compatible locators also support eCert checks of their locating circuitry, with physical and functional checks still needed.
C.Scope digital equipment
C.Scope states that its CXL4, DXL4 and MXL4 locators and SGA4, SGV4 and MXT4 generators/transmitters do not require periodic recalibration. Validation records or third-party test and conformity certification may still be needed for client requirements.
What about Radiodetection eCert?
Remote calibration checks
eCert is a manufacturer-approved check of the locating circuitry on compatible Radiodetection locators. It can confirm their calibration.
Physical checks still matter
eCert cannot inspect physical condition, such as damaged seals or screens. Appropriate visual, physical and functional checks are still needed.
What is included in my calibration certificate?
Equipment and test records
Digital calibration certificates identify the make, model and serial number, with the test results, calibration date and technician details. A next-due date is recorded where applicable to the maintenance schedule.
Traceability and site requirements
Our calibration instrumentation has calibration records traceable to national standards. Keep the equipment certificate with your maintenance records and send any specific client documentation requirements before booking.

FAQs – CAT & Genny Calibration
Booking, equipment, certificates and coverage. Choose a topic to find the details you need.
Calibration basics
How often should a CAT and Genny be calibrated?
Follow the instructions for your exact model and your maintenance plan. Radiodetection recommends annual service and calibration for C.A.T4 and Genny4. Some C.Scope digital equipment does not require periodic recalibration, but validation records or third-party certification may be needed. Damage, failed checks or suspect readings need attention sooner. Routine pre-use checks remain essential.
Does calibration make a CAT scanner safe to use on its own?
Calibration supports reliable equipment performance, but it does not guarantee that every buried service will be detected. HSG47 describes a wider safe system covering planning, locating and identifying services, and safe excavation. Correct training, suitable equipment and the manufacturer’s operating checks remain essential.
Is an eCert check the same as a full physical service?
No. Radiodetection eCert is an approved remote check of the locating circuitry on compatible locators and can confirm their calibration. It cannot inspect physical condition, such as damaged seals or screens. The manufacturer also requires appropriate visual, physical and functional checks. Tell us the model and existing certificate so we can discuss the service it needs.
Your equipment
Which makes of CAT and Genny do you support?
We work with commonly used Radiodetection, C.Scope, Leica and Vivax-Metrotech equipment. The service available depends on the model, age and condition. Send the exact make and model, or a clear photograph of its label, so we can confirm suitability before booking.
Can you calibrate a CAT and signal generator together?
Yes, subject to model suitability. Tell us the make and model of both items and whether you want the complete set checked. A CAT is the receiver and a Genny is the signal generator: checking one does not automatically confirm the condition or performance of the other.
What happens if a CAT or Genny fails its checks?
We explain the fault and discuss the next step with you. Depending on the equipment and issue, this may involve a repair through a suitable service partner, further assessment or replacement advice. A failed unit should not be returned to use as though it has passed calibration.
Does C.Scope equipment need annual recalibration?
C.Scope says its CXL4, DXL4 and MXL4 locators and SGA4, SGV4 and MXT4 generators/transmitters do not require periodic recalibration. Validation records or third-party test and conformity certification may still be needed for client requirements. Send your exact model and required documentation so we can confirm the available service.
Does a CAT or Genny need checking after repair?
The appropriate functional checks and any required calibration or validation should be completed after repair, following the manufacturer’s procedure. The work depends on the model and the repair. Tell us what has happened to the equipment when you enquire.
Bookings & visits
How much does CAT & Genny calibration cost?
Calibration starts from £50 + VAT. Your quote will identify which CAT, signal generator or complete set is covered, the work required and any transport or attendance charges. Send the make, model and quantity of each item so we can confirm the total before you book.
How quickly can you calibrate my equipment?
Fast turnaround options are available by arrangement. Timing depends on the model, condition, workload and whether you use workshop, courier or on-site service. Tell us your required return date and we will confirm availability before booking. Contact us before dropping off or sending equipment.
Can I send equipment by courier?
Yes. Contact us first to agree the equipment, price and turnaround, then send it to our Blackburn workshop using the agreed delivery instructions. Include your contact details, the booking reference and any fault information. We will confirm the return arrangements with you.
Do you offer on-site CAT & Genny calibration?
On-site visits can be arranged, particularly for larger fleets or several units at one location. Send your postcode, makes, models and quantities so we can check suitability, access requirements and availability. Courier and workshop options are also available.
Certificates & coverage
Do I receive a calibration certificate?
Yes. Digital calibration certificates identify the make, model and serial number, with test results, calibration date and technician details. A next-due date is recorded where applicable to the maintenance schedule. Our calibration instrumentation has records traceable to national standards. Where a model requires validation rather than recalibration, we confirm the appropriate work and documentation before booking.
Where can I get CAT & Genny calibration near me?
Our workshop is in Blackburn, Lancashire, serving businesses across Darwen, Accrington, Burnley, Preston, Chorley, Leyland and the wider North West, including Greater Manchester. Book before visiting so we can confirm your equipment, drop-off arrangements and expected turnaround. UK courier bookings and suitable on-site fleet visits are also available.
Do you offer CAT & Genny calibration nationwide?
Yes. You can arrange a courier booking to our Blackburn workshop from elsewhere in the UK. On-site visits can also be discussed where suitable for the equipment and location. Send your postcode, makes, models and quantities so we can confirm the available route.
Can you help us plan future calibration dates?
Ask us about reminder arrangements and coordinating equipment due dates when you book. For several units or sites, send your equipment list and planned availability so we can discuss a practical maintenance schedule.
What should I do if my calibration certificate is out of date?
Check the equipment’s maintenance instructions and your site or client requirements. If a required calibration or validation is overdue, arrange assessment and follow your procedures for keeping the equipment out of use until the required checks are completed. Send the model and existing certificate details when booking.
