Designed for Spray Booths, Smart Repairs & 2K Coatings
Velocity Safety does not advise the use of filtering respirators for isocyanate spraying. Our face fit testing service exists to support COSHH compliance where tight-fitting RPE is already present on site, alongside audit and insurance requirements.
Isocyanates are respiratory sensitisers controlled under COSHH. Filtering respirators are not suitable for spraying isocyanate paints. Where tight-fitting RPE is selected for another task, or tight-fitting air-fed breathing apparatus is used, a face fit test is required to confirm that the specific facepiece can achieve an adequate seal on the wearer.
Velocity Safety provides on-site qualitative (Bitrex / Saccharin) and quantitative (Portacount) face fit testing for automotive refinishers, smart-repair teams and industrial coating environments, delivered with a compliance-first approach aligned to HSE enforcement expectations.
We provide:
- On-site face fit testing for spray booths, refinishing shops and industrial coating teams
- Quantitative (Portacount) testing for suitable half-mask, full-face and tight-fitting air-fed facepieces
- Review of the task, respirator and product SDS information where filtering RPE is selected for associated non-spraying work
- Same-day digital certificates for audits, insurers and client compliance
- Retest reminders and mask-specific record keeping to support ongoing COSHH compliance
What This Spray-Booth Fit Testing Covers
- Face fit testing for tight-fitting RPE selected for use in coating, preparation, cleaning and maintenance tasks
- Quantitative (Portacount) testing for full-face respirators and other facepieces requiring a quantitative method
- Testing using the recognised exercises and protocol applicable to the selected facepiece
- Review of product SDS information where filtering RPE is selected for associated non-spraying work
- Face fit testing for tight-fitting air-fed systems, where these have been selected as suitable for the task
- Compatibility checks with goggles, hoods and spray PPE that may affect the face seal
- Same-day digital certificates for audits, insurers and client compliance
- Retest reminders and mask-specific documentation to support ongoing COSHH compliance
HSE expects air-fed breathing apparatus for isocyanate spraying. Face fit testing applies where tight-fitting RPE exists on site and does not replace RPE selection requirements.
Fit2Fit accredited for over 10 years and partnered with Betafit, Velocity Safety provides competent testing using recognised qualitative and quantitative face fit test methods.

Why Spray Painters Need a Different Level of RPE Protection
Spray painters stand directly inside the exposure zone every time the trigger is pulled. When 2K paints are atomised, the mist reaches the operator’s breathing zone before booth extraction can remove it, meaning even a small leak results in direct isocyanate exposure.
Isocyanates are low-odour, highly sensitising and penetrate deeper into the lungs than most airborne contaminants. Once a worker becomes sensitised, future exposure can trigger lifelong asthma, which is why HSE expects air-fed breathing apparatus for isocyanate spraying and documented face fit testing where tight-fitting RPE exists on site.
In a spray booth, protection relies on appropriate air-fed RPE supported by ventilation, with face fit testing used to verify the seal of any tight-fitting equipment present for COSHH and audit compliance.
Which Masks Need Face Fit Testing in Spray Booths?
If a tight-fitting respirator is selected for use, it must be face fit tested to the individual wearer. The test applies to the specific make, model, type and size of facepiece and should be completed as part of the RPE selection process.
For isocyanate spraying, HSE requires suitable air-fed breathing apparatus because filtering respirators are not suitable. Loose-fitting air-fed hoods and visors do not require face fit testing; tight-fitting air-fed facepieces do.
Masks that require a face fit test (where present on site)
- FFP3 disposable respirators
- Reusable half-mask respirators (e.g. P3, ABEK1-P3, A2-P3 variants)
- Full-face respirators
- Tight-fitting powered respirators
- Tight-fitting air-fed masks
Masks that do not require a face fit test
- Loose-fitting air-fed hoods, visors or helmets, provided:
- The equipment does not rely on a face seal
- The breathing-air supply is tested at appropriate intervals and meets BS EN 12021 requirements
- The equipment provides the protection required by the COSHH assessment
Filtering, Tight-Fitting Air-Fed and Loose-Fitting RPE for 2K Spraying
HSE guidance requires suitable air-fed breathing apparatus for spraying isocyanate and 2K paints. This comparison explains where face fit testing applies and why filtering respirators should not be used for the spraying process.
| Feature | Filtering Respirators | Tight-Fitting Air-Fed Facepieces | Loose-Fitting Air-Fed Hoods or Visors |
|---|---|---|---|
| Examples | FFP3 masks and reusable half- or full-face respirators fitted with filters | Air-fed half- or full-face masks that rely on a seal against the wearer’s face | Air-fed hoods, helmets or visors that do not rely on a face seal |
| Face Fit Test Required? | Yes, when selected for a task | Yes – the facepiece relies on an effective seal | No – the equipment does not rely on a face seal |
| Suitable for Isocyanate Spraying? | No – HSE states filtering respirators are unsuitable for spraying isocyanate paints | Only where the specific air-fed equipment has been selected as suitable through the COSHH assessment | Yes – this is the usual HSE-recommended approach when the equipment provides the required protection |
| Clean-Shaven Requirement | Yes – facial hair must not interfere with the seal | Yes – facial hair must not interfere with the seal | No face seal is required, although the equipment must still be worn correctly |
| Breathing-Air Testing Required? | No supplied-air system is used | Yes – the supplied breathing air must be tested at appropriate intervals and meet BS EN 12021 requirements | Yes – the supplied breathing air must be tested at appropriate intervals and meet BS EN 12021 requirements |
| Typical Role | Associated preparation, cleaning or maintenance tasks where the COSHH assessment confirms filtering RPE is suitable | Air-fed protection where a tight-fitting facepiece has been assessed as suitable and fit tested to the wearer | Primary air-fed protection for isocyanate spraying where a hood, helmet or visor provides the required protection |
Important: Filtering respirators must not be used for spraying isocyanate paints. Face fit testing is required for tight-fitting RPE but does not establish whether that equipment is suitable for the task. RPE selection must be based on the COSHH assessment, HSE guidance and the manufacturer’s instructions.
What Happens During a Face Fit Test for Spray Painters
Spray painters complete the recognised face fit test protocol applicable to the selected facepiece, supported by a review of the task, RPE and other PPE worn during use. Here’s what the process looks like when we test operators in automotive and industrial spray shops:
1. Pre-Test Check
We review the products in use, inspect the respirator, and confirm that the mask and any filters present on site are being assessed for compliance and record-keeping purposes.
2. Donning & Seal Check
The sprayer puts the mask on correctly, sets strap tension, and completes a user seal check so the fit test reflects real-world use rather than poor donning.
3. The Fit Test
Qualitative (taste-based) or quantitative (Portacount) testing is carried out depending on the mask type. The appropriate method depends on the facepiece. Full-face respirators require a suitable quantitative method, while qualifying disposable and half-mask respirators may be tested using qualitative or quantitative methods.
4. Results & Fixes
We confirm the outcome, explain any leaks or failures identified, and record any issues relating to mask fit, condition or compatibility for compliance purposes.
5. Certificate Issued
Each wearer receives a same-day digital test record identifying the facepiece, method and result, together with guidance on recognised re-test triggers.

Spray Painter Face Fit Testing – FAQs
Spray booths raise very specific questions about masks, isocyanates and legal duties. These FAQs cut through the noise and give clear, HSE-aligned answers for paint sprayers, bodyshops and industrial coating teams.
Do spray painters legally need face fit testing?
Where a tight-fitting respirator is selected for use, it must be face fit tested to the individual wearer. The test applies to the specific make, model, type and size of facepiece.
HSE requires suitable air-fed breathing apparatus for isocyanate spraying because filtering respirators are not suitable. Loose-fitting air-fed hoods and visors do not require face fit testing, while tight-fitting air-fed facepieces do. Supplied breathing air must be tested at appropriate intervals and meet BS EN 12021 requirements.
How often should spray painters be retested?
There is no universal one- or two-year expiry period. Re-testing is required when the respirator or wearer changes in a way that could affect the seal. Relevant triggers include:
- The sprayer changes weight
- Has dental work
- Grows facial hair
- Switches mask model
- Wears new goggles/hoods that affect the seal
Are filtering masks acceptable for isocyanate spraying?
No. HSE guidance and enforcement practice treat isocyanate spraying as a task requiring air-fed breathing apparatus.
Filtering respirators, including FFP3, half masks and full-face masks, are not considered suitable primary protection for spraying 2K or isocyanate-containing coatings.
Where filtering RPE exists on site, face fit testing is still required for COSHH and audit compliance, but it does not replace the requirement to use appropriate air-fed protection.
Do air-fed masks need face fit testing?
Tight-fitting air-fed facepieces: Yes. They rely on a face seal and must be fit tested to the wearer.
Loose-fitting air-fed hoods, visors or helmets: No face fit test is required, provided:
- The equipment does not rely on a face seal
- The breathing-air supply is tested at appropriate intervals and meets BS EN 12021 requirements
- The equipment is suitable for the task and provides the required protection
- Operators receive appropriate RPE training
What’s the best type of fit test for sprayers?
The correct test method depends on the type of facepiece. Quantitative testing provides a numerical fit factor and is required for some types of respirator, including full-face masks:
- Works for half and full-face masks
- Not reliant on taste
- Provides a numerical fit factor
Quantitative testing is commonly used in high-risk spray environments to provide stronger verification of face seal performance where tight-fitting RPE exists on site.
Do spray painters have to be clean-shaven?
Yes – for any tight-fitting respirator.
Facial hair, stubble and even uneven growth break the seal instantly.
Loose-fitting air-fed hoods are the accepted alternative where workers cannot be clean-shaven, provided they are genuinely loose-fitting and supplied with EN 12021-tested breathing air.
What records do we need for HSE or insurance audits?
A compliant spray shop should keep:
- Face fit test reports for each sprayer
- Mask make/model/size used in the test
- LEV Thorough Examination records
- Breathing air test certificates
- RPE servicing logs
- Training + induction records
Velocity Safety provides all required documentation as part of every test.
Can we use the same mask after a failed test?
Not without resolving the issue.
Common fixes include:
- Adjusting strap tension
- Switching mask size
- Replacing damaged seals
- Removing conflicting PPE (goggles/hoods)
If the model does not fit the wearer, this is recorded as a failure and alternative options are documented for compliance and audit purposes.
Do 2K hardeners always contain isocyanates?
Nearly all commercially used 2K hardeners and activators do.
Always check the SDS (Section 3). If isocyanates are present, HSE expects air-fed breathing apparatus for spraying, and any tight-fitting RPE present on site must be face fit tested for COSHH compliance.
Do you offer face fit testing near me for spray painters?
Yes – Velocity Safety provides mobile, on-site spray-painter fit testing across Lancashire, Manchester, Liverpool, Cheshire and the wider UK.
We regularly support automotive refinishers, smart-repair teams, bodyshops and industrial coating facilities with same-day certificates and mask-specific documentation.
